If you have ever watched live ice sculpting, or seen the incredible creations that are created by ice artists, then you may have wished that you possessed even a fraction of the skill to create something as amazing as a mermaid constructed of ice. While trained and talented ice artists may take years to master their trade, the good news is that DIY ice sculpting allows even a novice to create a basic sculpture to impress friends and family – even if it may not be on a par with some of the award-winning creations made famous across the world.
There are three levels of DIY carving when it comes to ice art – choose the level that fits you best, and follow these tips to create your very own creation of ice:
The Easy Way
You will need the following:
- 3D Printer
- Water
- Food coloring for effect
While not everyone is able to get their hands on a 3D printer, it is possible to hire them or to find a shop that will let you use one for your needs. These printers have long been able to produce models from paper mache and other material, but when water is added, amazing ice sculptures can be created – allowing you to create a range of sculptures according to the design you choose. To add color and effect, throw in a drop of food coloring into the water – you could even add glitter for an added effect. Always be sure to place your sculpture onto its base as soon as possible, and keep an ice pick on hard for any touch ups you may require.
The downside is that you may require some help to get your sculptures done, but nevertheless, this remains one of the quickest and easiest ways to create a sculpture made of ice in a short space of time, with no chipping, chiseling or other work required.

The Intermediate Way
You will need the following:
- Ice molds in the shapes or designs of your choice
- Distilled Water
- Food coloring for effect
- Glitter and other effects
If you are determined to make your ice carving on your own, without the use of a fancy machine, then you could do so using ice molds. These can be found online or at selected stores, or you could even use silicone cake tins if you choose. Start by filling the molds with the distilled water, and then add food coloring and any glitter or other special effects that will float in the sculpture. Once you have done this, stick the mold into the freezer for 48 hours, and then turn upside down – allowing the ice to melt slightly before turning onto a plate for presentation.

The Advanced way
You will need the following:
- Ice Tools
- Clean, solid block of ice
- Warm Clothing
- Drip Tray
- Food coloring for effect
- Walk-in freezer or other cold room environment
If you are up to the challenge, doing it the proper way takes patience, practice and plenty of concentration. Start with a simple creation, and always do your homework first – there are plenty of guides on basic carving techniques that will help you get started. Watching live sculptures will also give you an idea of how to go about creating your sculpture.
Starting with the rough ice sculpting tools such as saw, rubber mallet and chisel, you can begin by chopping off rough chunks to get your basic shape. Once you have gotten the outline, you can use ice picks and other finer tools to add detail – eventually resulting in your finished DIY ice sculpture.
